This image is special because the very next morning, a Coast Guard cutter was brought down from Sault St. Marie to break up the ice jam shown in this image. The local residents of Grand Haven were fearing some flooding. The very nice morning - all of this ice was cleared!

Stacy Niedzwiecki's fascination with nature’s beauty has found its way through the camera lens, earning awards in many art and photography competitions. Her work has been featured in the Michigan 24/7 photography book, Whisper in the Woods Nature Journal, the Rockford Squire newspaper, Michigan Blue magazine and the Explore St. Louis Official Visitors’ Guide.
In August of 2008, two of Stacy’s artworks were selected to hang on display at the Governor’s Residence in Lansing as part of the Governor’s Residence Michigan Artists Program through July 2009.
Her most honored accomplishment is the installation of 63 of her nature images at the permanent art collection in the new Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion, which opened June 30, 2008 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

I've always loved the Grand Haven lighthouse and pier because of the way the structure sits out into the water. You can clearly enjoy it from both sides of the Grand River channel. If you go to Grand Haven in the winter, please exercise extreme caution - conditions can be unpredictable. It's not wise to explore out on the pier or the ice shelf areas - the water is constantly moving and shifting, and the area is know for its strong undercurrently. This park, although a bit off the beaten path - provides some lovely shoreline scenery that seems a bit more like that of Lake Superior than of Lake Michigan. Although I had no luck finding one of my own, local say it's a great place to find Petoskey stones and other interesting rocks from the glacial age.Jefferson National Expansion Memorial // Nov 12, 2007
I have visited the Jefferson Memorial area three times, and each time has been a unique and interesting experience. The Gateway Arch, of course, is the main draw. Riding up in the tram is something everyone should try (unless you're a bit claustrophobic or afraid of heights!).
Depending on the time of day and lighting conditions - the Arch ends up looking different in every photo because of its reflective exterior. It is a very impressive structure and really an amazing piece of engineering.
The Riverboat Cruise on the Mississippi is a great way to get a tour of the area, and the Museum of Westward Expansion preserves some of the rarest artifacts from the days of Lewis and Clark.
There is a lovely park area with a tree-lined pond which is nice for strolling. Often there are festivals and events held right on the Plaza.
Overall, the entire area is a worthwhile experience and can be enjoyed by people of all ages.Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore // Nov 3, 2007
THE LEGEND OF THE SLEEPING BEAR - Long ago, in the land that is today Wisconsin, Mother Bear and her two cubs were driven into Lake Michigan by a raging forest fire. The cubs swam strongly but the distance and the water proved too much for them. They fell further and further behind and ultimately slipped beneath the waves. When Mother Bear reached the Michigan shore, she climbed to the top of a bluff and peered back across the water, searching vainly for her cubs. The Great Spirit saw her and took pity on her plight. The red-bricked Little Sable Lighthouse tower stands 107 feet tall. At the top of the tower is a black cast-iron parapet with curved supports. My husband and two sons trekked up 139 cast iron steps with me this past Saturday to take in the view, and it was well worth the climb! This is a much-loved local landmark. On almost any given day, tourists and residents alike can be found enjoying the Rockford Dam area.
Mothers pushing strollers, couples walking hand-in-hand, families all enjoying their ice cream, anglers hoping to land the next big catch... This is a place of pure enjoyment, both young and old. Some folks enjoy themselves on the Reds on the River deck overlooking the scene. Others make the park a refreshment stop before continuing their cycling adventures on the adjacent White Pine Trail system. Often a wedding party can be seen mugging for a photographer.

Most of the property is “savanna” habitat – an open, prairie-like field with scattered trees. The field of blue lupine is more than just a scenic amenity, though. The lupine creates crucial habitat for one of Michigan's rarest native animal species: the Karner blue butterfly.
This tiny little park is just a gem. Newly established, the Land Conservancy is now raising money to make a fence on side of the park that touches the road. The harsh road salt used on the winter roads can damage the lupine - the Karner Blue Butterflies' only food source. I plan to visit again in the early spring - it's delightful.
The springtime view of the field is beautiful, with a carpet of the native blue lupine. The lupine supports one of Kent County’s rarest native animal species: the Karner blue butterfly. Because the Karner blue’s larvae are dependent on the blue lupine as their only food source, it is now listed as “endangered” by the federal government. I have had several lovely mornings at the Preserve observing these amazing creatures, and ask all visitors to respect their fragile environment while visiting.Muskegon State Park // May 14, 2007
We spotted terns, herons, swans and a crazy little raccoon who was dangling himself by his hind paws into a trash bin, happily munching on french fries he discovered. We had to laugh when we noticed he had a collection of fast-food paper bags in the rocky areas beneath the boardwalk pier.Outdoor Discovery Center // Feb 14, 2007
This is a wonderful place for people of all ages and abilities. In September of 2006, a Sensory Trail was added so that there will be barrier-free opportunities for folks to enjoy nature. I have taken two photography workshops here, and have enjoyed myself greatly.
My first encounter with this lovely outdoor center was last summer with the Southwestern Michigan Council of Camera Clubs annual summer weekend event. I had no idea this little gem existed within an hour drive of my home.
I signed up for the "Birds of Prey" photo shoot and was delighted with the natural setting of the area, the professional staff and the variety of animals featured at the center. The City of Rockford is the only Kent County recipient of a Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund Grant in the amount of $222,000 to complete Phase II of the Rogue River Network.
This phase of the trail will begin just north of the newly constructed gazebo in Peppler Park. It will meander approximately 1,600 linear feet north on the west bank of the river. The trail will include asphalt, limestone, and boardwalk areas. It will have overlooks, benches, tables, and trash cans. Our family was delighted to discover this park. We had NO idea such a gem existed within a day's drive of our home in Michigan.
There is something here for everyone - nature lovers, photographers, kids, hikers, and even those folks who want to lounge by the pool (yes - there are two lovely pools - both at the campground and the Lodge area!).
There are many interesting programs and tours, and we found the campgrounds almost mosquito-free (although we did have nightly raccoon raids!).
Be sure to keep an eye on those who cannot walk steep trails and on small children - there are sheer cliffs and dropoffs in many areas. We kept our toddler in a backpack carrier on all excursions.

At the end of M 37, on the tip of Old Mission Peninsula, is a large, wide beach area with extremely shallow water, a picnic area, a reconstruction of an early settler's cabin and privies. It is an ideal spot for wading. The lighthouse there is not open to the public. Beach sites are accessible along the final mile of M 37 until the road ends at the park. To reach this park, take M 37 to the end of Old Mission Peninsula. At this point you are about 22 miles from Front Street in Traverse City.
