Garry Shorter, a professional photographer from Maryland, judged the April contest!
Garry is a full time wedding and event photographer in Orlando, FL. He started photographing weddings professionally in
1987 while in the US Air Force. The thing that he loves most about the business is no matter how much you know you can always learn more.
Being a wedding photographer, he deals with new people and places every weekend; and even after 15 years, he learns something new every time
he picks up a camera. As with many others, his real passion is for wildlife and nature photography, and he spends as much time as possible
in the field. Garry loves the challenge of capturing wildlife and nature images, as well as observing the individual personalities of every
animal. Getting that special photo is not always about being a great photographer; it has as much to do with putting in the time and effort
to get the shot you want. Animals will not pose for you so you need to be patient and wait for that perfect shot. His strongest belief is
to always put nature first when shooting, "just because you can get closer does not mean you should".
David Hawxhurst, a professional photographer from Maryland, judged the March contest!
A native Marylander, David Hawxhurst was raised on a farm by the Chesapeake Bay. The beauty
of that area first inspired his love of photography, and he remains active in conservation activities throughout the region.
He has also taught wildlife photography courses and done pro bono work for non-profits such as the Chesapeake Bay Foundation,
American Forests, and the Nature Conservancy. His commercial clients include The Smithsonian, World Bank, the US Navy,
Chesapeake Life Magazine, National Geographic Kids, Johns Hopkins University, and US Department of the Interior. Hawxhurst's
images have been displayed in galleries around the Washington DC area.
"As a professional photographer I've trained my eye to see compositions and subject that haven’t been explored. One of
the biggest challenges in an artistic media that is assessable to so many is exploring the road less traveled. I look for unique
photos that convey emotion and tell stories. The elements in an image that I appreciate are strong shape and form, color that is
appropriate for the mood of the images and an over all simple, minimal composition that tells a story."
