Since time is our most valuable asset, I enjoy capturing a moment of it in photos as often as possible.I found MPP through the www.parks.ca.gov website while trying to help save San Onofre state park from take over by outside interests. The wonderful work by members and visitors at MPP alike has inspired me to practice more at my real love, digital photography.I enjoy the quest for new angles,lighting and learning new techniques I'm honored by the world every time I'm allowed to capture a slice of time.

Five hundred years ago, when Europeans first arrived on the California's central coast, they found it inhabited by the Chumash Indians. An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 of them lived in small villages spread over a territory which extended from Morro Bay south to Malibu. Although the Chumash depended heavily upon the sea, they also drew on many other sources for food, clothing, and shelter, and were probably part of a large trading network. Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, also known as San Luis Rey Mission Church, was founded on June 13, 1798 in what is now the city of Oceanside, California. May 31, 1931, Edward Doheny donated 41 acres of ocean front property to the State of California to be used “perpetually for public use.” This land became Doheny State Beach Park, California’s first state beach. Subsequent land acquisitions from the Santa Fe Railroad, University of California Regents, and Union Oil Company provided Doheny State Beach with an additional 21 acres. Doheny State Beach Park was reclassified to Doheny State Beach on July 1,1963.<br>Doheny’s gentle breakers make it an ideal place for surfing. Doheny was a focal point of the surfing counterculture in the 1950’s and 1960’s when its name was used in the song Surfer Joe by the Surfaris and the Beach Boys’ hit Surfin’USA. Morro Bay's most striking feature is Morro Rock, a 176 m high volcanic plug. Morro Rock stands at the entrance to the harbor, and a causeway connects it with the shore. Previously, it was surrounded by water, but the northern channel was filled in to make the harbor. The Rock, as locals call it, was quarried from 1889 to 1969. There is no public access to the rock itself because it is a reserve for the locally endangered peregrine falcon. However, the area around the base of Morro Rock can be visited.A. D. The San Diego Zoo has a wonderful koala exhibit. I was lucky to get this photo of one awake! They sleep most of the day.The koala's five fingers are arranged with opposable thumbs, providing better gripping ability. The first two fingers are positioned in apposition on the front paws, and the first three fingers for the hind paws. The koala is one of the few mammals (other than primates) that has fingerprints. Carlsbad's history begins with the Luiseño people who located one of their villages, Palamai, near what is today Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Because groves of trees were not common along the Southern California coast, early Spanish explorers (1500-1700 AD) referred to Torrey Pines State Reserve area as Punto de Los Arboles, which literally means "Point of Trees." They used this area both as a landmark and as a warning that they were too close to the shore in the fog. In 1769, the Portola-Serra Sacred Expedition passed through nearby Sorrento Valley on its way from San Diego to colonize Monterey and establish missions along the way. The trail they used is referred to as El Camino Real. The trees themselves were referred to as Soledad Pines (Solitary Pines) by the first non-Native Americans to visit the area. 1928 the 1,200 foot long wooden Municipal fishing and pleasure pier at San Clemente was constructed at no cost to local citizens. In 1939, and again in 1983, strong storms damaged the pier requiring it to be rebuilt. A bait and tackle shop, restrooms and a restaurant greets visitors at the entrance to the pier. Doheny State Beach has terrific camping and picnicing areas with tall trees and green grass areas as well as being one of the best places to learn surfing in the country. Home to the Buena Vista Audubon Nature Center, and California's first Ecological Reserve, Buena Vista Lagoon is a 223-acre wetland habitat located within the cities of Carlsbad and Oceanside. It is owned and managed by the California Department of Fish and Game. At least 103 bird species, 18 mammals, and 14 amphibians and reptiles live in and around the lagoon, and many more birds visit during spring and fall migrations. It now stands as the oldest two-story brick building on the West Coast, but all those sturdy bricks aren't enough to keep the spirits out (or in). <br><br>From the outside, the Whaley House looks pleasant, even cheerful, as it stands along a busy street in Old Town. But inside, it shows a darker face that reaches back into San Diego's more tainted historical roots. The trouble may have started when the house was built over an old cemetery and near the gallows site, but it's not over yet. In 1922 the building which is now the Ranger Station and Visitor Center at Torrey Pines Ca.was built. It was commissioned by Ellen Browning Scripps and probably designed by H.L.Jackson. Architects Richard S. Doheny State Beach was immortalized in Beach Boy songs long before the boat harbor was built years ago in Dana Point. Now it's home to beginning surfers. It's giant waves were tamed forever when the boat harbor was built. Surfers refer to it as "slowheny" as there are usually small long rolling waves coming in. Pirate's Cove at Corona Del Mar State Beach was where Gilligan's Island was filmed. The Buena Vista Lagoon lies within the cities of Carlsbad and Oceanside in northern San Diego County, California. Built in 1928 the 1,200 foot long wooden San Clemente fishing and pleasure pier was constructed at no cost to local citizens. In 1939, and again in 1983, strong storms damaged the pier requiring it to be rebuilt. A bait and tackle shop, restrooms and a restaurant greets visitors at the entrance to the pier. The San Clemente Beach Club (as it was originally named by Ole Hanson) was designed by the renowned Virgil Westbrook who designed most of the first buildings in San Clemente, built by contractor Roy Strang who built many of them, and dedicated in May of 1928, just three years after the city was founded. It boasted an Olympic size pool and became the site for the 1932 Olympic tryouts. In January 2009 a decision will be made by the federal government that will decide if 60% of San Onofre State Park can be taken over by the TCA (Transportation Corridor Authority) To put in a toll road that will cost $15 each way to use. There are at least 7 other alternative routes that the organization can use to put this toll road in without taking over a state park, but the TCA is insistant that the take over of a state park is the best route. This decision could threaten all state parks in America, if the take over is allowed. Seasonal fog along the coast is a natural occurance this time of the year in southern California especially in San Clemente. Amtrack's Surfliner is a great way to see the coastline closeup. It's route goes from San Diego all the way up the coastline along the surf (hence the name "Surfliner" closer than the road by the San Clemente pier and state beach and then inland for a while at Dana Point. I went to an important hearing yesterday that will affect all state parks. If the decision against the 241 toll road is reversed in January 2009 a precedent will be set that affects all state parks throughout America. I was lucky enough to attend Dana Point's Tall Ships Festival a couple of weekends ago. Tall Ships rally off the coast of Doheny state beach and stage mock cannon battles at sunset. It's a thrilling sight for onlookers and a great photo experience. Five tall ships from all over California gather once a year for this fun festival with pretend pirates and tours of the ships available. If you have the chance to visit Dana Point and Doheny State Beach During the Toshiba Tall Ships Festival, your in for a real treat. You can take a tour of the countries few remaining tall ships. The Pilgrim (built as a replica of the one mentioned in William Henry Dana's book "Two Years Before the Mast" makes it's permant home in Dana Point, but The Spirit of Dana Point, The Irving and Exy Johnson, The American Pride, The Californian, and the Lynx are here for the festival weekend. Just before sunset these great ships make their way out beyond the breakwater for mock cannon fights and encounters. It's quite a sight for camera enthusiasts and onlookers alike, as the sun settles low on the horizon and the glow of the oncoming sunset is reflected on the sails of the ships. Two Harbors on Catalina Island is 26 miles off the coast of Los Angeles. A great place to visit if you want to escape to a place that southren California was like years ago. The harbors are home to boating enthusiasts stopping by for the day or a longer. Unlike Avalon with it's many hotels and lodging opportunities, Two Harbors has but one lodge that has twelve rooms built by the Banning Brothers who owned Catalina Island originally. In the 1920's 14 buffalo were brought to the island for the filming of a movie and now tourists can see large herds that roam free on the interior of the island. Leucadia State Beach is a Surfers paradise accessable by a long flight of stairs at either end of the beach. Right before sunset avid surfers rush to catch the last waves before the darkness comes in. The stairs to the beach are accented by lights and there is a shower at one of the stairs' landing provided to rinse off. The tide comes right up to the beach cliffs that accent this beautiful beach at high tide. Surfers enter the water and take off on a wave immediately. Standing at the first landing you can see for miles down the beach towards Carlsbad to the north and Encinitas to the south. Crystal Cove State Park in Newport Beach has over 2400 acres of undeveloped woodland, which is popular for hiking and horseback riding.The offshore waters are designated as an underwater park. Crystal Cove is used by mountain bikers inland and scuba and skin divers underwater. The beach is popular with swimmers and surfers. Visitors can explore tidepools and sandy coves. Once a part of a 165,000 acre Spanish land grant, Bolsa Chica presently consists of approximately 1550 acres of undeveloped coastal wetlands and adjacent upland areas. Native Americans once lived on upland mesas gathering shellfish and other edibles from the wetlands. In 1900 the tidal nature of the wetlands was essentially destroyed when the natural ocean inlet to the ocean was closed to improve duck hunting. Since then the area has been used for agriculture, cattle grazing, military coastal artillery emplacement and oil production. In 1973 as part of a controversial land swap, the state of California acquired approximately 30 acres of wetland adjacent to Pacific Coast Highway. A portion of this was restored by the state in 1979 to become the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. The remaining acreage was retained in private hands. Planning for the construction of a massive marina, commercial and residential development was quickly underway. The plan was drastically reduced in 1989 through the settlement of a lawsuit filed by the Amigos de Bolsa Chica. In 1997 the state acquired 880 acres of Bolsa Chica wetlands and another 40 acres was acquired in 2005, bringing the public ownership of Bolsa Chica to over 1200 acres. Wetland restoration of nearly 600 acres was begun in 2004. In summer of 206 seawater flowed into the restored wetlands for the first time in over 100 years! The Bolsa Chica wetlands was one of the largest coastal wetlands restorations ever undertaken in southern California. Deception Pass Bridge connects Whidbey Island to Fidalgo Island and is a popular spot for photographers to capture the beauty of Puget Sound. In 1792 Joseph Whidbey, master of the HMS Discovery and Captain Vancover's chief navigator sailed through the passage now called Deception Pass and proved that it was not a small bay as charted by the spainards (hence the name Deception) but a deep and turbulent channel that connects the strait of Juan de Fuca with the Saratoga Passage.
In the early years of the 20th century travelers of the horse-and-buggy era used an unscheduled ferry to cross from Fidalgo Island to Whidbey Island. To call the ferry they banged a saw with a mallet and then sat back to wait.. Sixty percent of San Onofres'pristine State Beach "Trestles" is in great danger of being taken over for development to put in a toll road that could be moved elsewhere so as not to eliminate wetlands, camp grounds and negatively impact the way the ocean currents move at this beautiful state Park which is the Yosemite of surfing here in southren California. The coastal commission here overturned this decision to put a toll road through 60 percent of this state park but now the TCA (Transportation Corridor Authority)is appealing this decision and trying to make it look like the opponents to this toll road are trying to limit access to the general public. They have lobbists that are getting the newspapers involved and placing advertisments that say that the organizers of the Save Trestles movement are trying to limit access, when in fact if this toll road is approved, it would set a precedent that by take over of 60 percent of this state beach the transportation authorities could pave over any or all of our countries state parks whenever they wished to. We could be taking photos of freeways in Yellowstone and Yosemite rather than our beautiful wilderness parks. Find out more at

Larrabee is the first state park in Washington. It was donated by the Larrabee family with the intent that it be made into a park. I'm sure the Larrabee family would be pleased at how many people enjoy this wonderful gift of land as a state park.When I was there recently I noticed happy local families enjoying the cove on Samish Bay for boating and tidepool exploration. This beautiful 2,683 acre camping park features 2 freshwater lakes and lots of trails. It's located near Bellingham in northwest Washington. See www.parks.wa.gov/parkpage for more details. Cayucos is a small California beach town between Pismo and Big Sur, with fabulous rock formations and tide pools, especially at low tide. Lots of photo opportunities. The rocks formed are "pillow rocks" from ancient volcanic experiences and there are lots of Serpentine(Green)rocks found only in northren California. Take the kids and your dog (dogs are allowed on this beach), take a walk on the beach, show them all the wonders of the ocean at low tide, from rocks draped in seaweed and mussels, to tide pools decorated with starfish, pink and green crabs and sea snails. Fabulous photo opportunities everywhere you look! We spent 2 days and any photographer can see why Ansel Adams spent most of his life there. This awe inspiring landscape paradise is the size of Rhode Island. Go in the spring! It's not too crowded, the waterfalls are dynamic and even with a cloudy sky you will get a lot of wonderful shots with any camera.
