As the season goes from Late fall into early winter, Baxter State Park has a quiet calm settle over it. On a cool late November morning (38 degrees), Daicey Pond is a beautiful spot to be able to sit on a dock, have the sun warm you, take in all the sounds of nature, and heal one's spirit.

Daicey Pond is one of those beautiful spots within the boundries of Baxter State Park. The park has gone quiet, awaiting winter's snow. The Saturday after Thanksgiving, the Park Rangers leave for the season. Areas of the park that are not safe without their presense are closed. The park gate is left open until the first snow that covers the Tote Road, allowing the occasional vistor to self register, enjoy the quiet of nature, with very little contact with the human race. Being able to enjoy this quiet place, is a great way to heal the spirit.

While experiencing our first freeze of the fall season on Saturday/Sunday, the Autumn colors are begining to show their show in the northern reaches of the park. It is promising to be a spectacular fall foliage after the extremely wet summer season.

It is well known that moose love to eat aquatic plants, they are tender and tasty. But they also escape to the water to rid themselves of the flies. With the rainy season that has been summer this year, the mosquito and black fly populations are still very intense as this moose will testify along with the photographer.

Baxter State Park opened her gates for the season on Friday May 15th and will stay open until the last Saturday of November or measurable snow whichever comes first. Hiking/climbing is now open on the lower peaks with a planned opening of some of the trails on Mt Katahdin for Thursday, May 21. There is still a lot of snow on the mountain, so some trails are still closed. When visiting the park this time of the year, be prepared for the black flies.
