Owls Head lighthouse is located a few miles south of Rockland, Maine, on the grounds of an active Coast Guard station.
It got its name because, as seen from the water, the headland where it is located resembles an owl. Its classic fourth-order Fresnel lens, which has been in service for many years, emits a fixed white beam which can be seen for up to sixteen miles, and the lighthouse has been guiding mariners to safety since 1825. The property also houses a very powerful fog signal.
