Prairie Creek is a sanctuary of old growth Coastal Redwood, with western hemlock and Douglas fir. Sitka spruce and red alder dominate along the 10 mi coast line. Western azalea and rhododendron bloom in May/June and offer bright accents to the dense green of the forest. The Rhododendron Trail is a favorite for seeing this showy display. Park wildlife includes Roosevelt elk. Prairie Creek offers hiking, nature study, wildlife viewing, beach combing, picnicking, a visitor center with exhibits and a nature store. The park is a World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve with over 280 Save-the-Redwoods League Memorial Groves.

Set aside in the early 1920’s by the forethought of the people of California and the generosity of the Save-the-Redwoods League, Prairie Creek is a 14,000 acre sanctuary of old growth coast redwood. Prairie Creek offers hiking, nature study, wildlife viewing, beach combing, picnicking, a visitor center with exhibits and a nature store.

Prairie Creek State Park offers hiking in the (mostly) old growth coastal redwood forest, nature study, wildlife viewing, beach combing, picnicking, a visitor center with exhibits and a nature store. Prairie Creek, a World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve, is a sanctuary of old growth coast redwood. This park was set aside in the early 1920’s by the forethought of the people of California and the generosity of the Save-the-Redwoods League. Elk Meadow is a good place to watch Roosevelt Elk in the fall. The dominant bulls have sequestered their cows and the rest of the bulls just kind of hang out nearby just in case.
